ABSTRACT

To many members of the design and construction industry, the building codes and standards can be intimidating, complicated and vastly confusing with variants both among and within jurisdictions. Coupled with these regional regulations are the industry standards and the insurance requirements that further complicate the code selection and implementation process. Research literature shows that in the past ten years the amount of information available in the form of recognized standards supporting the semi-conductor manufacturing facility projects has increased enormously. The nature of some of the materials and processes used in the high-technology microelectronics industries is highly hazardous and life threatening for the people working inside these facilities. As a consequence, large volumes of codes and standards have been developed to reduce and control the associated hazards. The magnitude of information available is significant and has not been cataloged or identified with inter-relationships in any one location or by any individual company. The main purpose of this research is to organize the Codes and Standards to develop a database model to be transferred onto a web-based software program as a research tool for the Architect / Engineer / Contractor community, specifically for semiconductor manufacturing facilities. A model for a web-based tool has been proposed in the research. The proposal highlights the distinguishing features of the Codes and Standards database and outlines the characteristics of the web-based tool. A tutorial has been included to serve as a training manual for the user for easy navigation through the Codes and Standards website. Recommendations have been provided regarding harnessing this web-based resource to be used as an effective tool by the semiconductor industry. Finally, some future steps have been identified for the research, which would enhance the overall product quality of the resource and increase its value to the user.
