ABSTRACT
This research was conducted to find the best available technology for alternatives to current cleanroom design and construction methods, and to determine the cost and schedule impacts. The following methodology has been utilized to achieve the research objectives. A literature review was done to highlight the opportunities for standardization and prefabrication in cleanroom design and construction. A survey was performed to assess the standardization and prefabrication opportunities in terms of possibilities and necessities. A conceptual development was accomplished to facilitate the schedule and cost impacts analysis and evaluation by defining the details of those opportunities. An analysis and evaluation was conducted to clarify the pros and cons of standardization and prefabrication in cleanroom project. The literature review demonstrated the tendency for standardization, modularization and prefabrication in other industries and in the semiconductor industry. The survey confirms the ideas of standardization and prefabrication in cleanroom design and construction. The conceptual development of certain ideas was conducted under specific cleanroom design and construction scenarios for further evaluation regarding the possibility and necessity of standardization and prefabrication. The idea of standardized tool and utility connection was considered to have the most critical impact on a cleanroom project. Its impacts on schedule and cost were also analyzed based on real project data. Conclusions on standardization and prefabrication in cleanroom design and construction as well as recommendations for further study in this area are also presented.
