ABSTRACT

The Chinese electronics industry is emerging as one of the fastest growing IT sectors in the world. Low manufacturing cost, combined with potentially huge consumer market and governmental policy support encouraged a flood of investment in the electronic industry in China.  With the accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in November of 2001, China is greatly improving the investing environment and minimizing some of the barriers to attract more foreign enterprises in the future. Although some trade barriers will remain until 2006, it is now much easier for foreign firms to enter the Chinese market and operate businesses in China.  With the shift of the electronic sector moving towards China, it also brings business opportunities for construction and installation to the overseas building contractors and equipment suppliers.  However, the current attractive condition hides a number of issues or pitfalls to the companies wishing to take advantage of investing or operating in China.  To deliver these advanced technology facility projects, a huge challenge is presented to both foreign owners and contractors because of the complexity of the Chinese culture differences, economic environment, governmental policy, construction market and legal concerns. In this research, by identifying the key success factors and incorporating those factors into a foreign companies’ business strategies, it will help foreign contractors enhance their performance and competition to successfully operate a business in China
