PREDICTING LABOR RESOURCES FOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FACILITIES CONSTRUCTION

ABSTRACT
The availability of a sufficient supply of skilled labor has always been critical to the construction industry. The issue of labor shortage is more prominent for construction of advanced technology facilities because of the cyclical and localized nature of the industry and the need for skilled labor with unique skill sets. Due to the huge investments involved in construction and the pressure to meet market demand in time, facilities must be built faster, more cost effective, and with high quality standards. Consequently, being able to forecast the resources needed early in the project will help better plan the resource requirements, thus helping to prevent shortages of skilled labor.
This research has studied the labor usage pattern in the construction of semiconductor manufacturing facilities. It has evaluated different skill sets of labor resources and has developed graphical models to help predict the labor requirements for constructing new semiconductor fabrication facilities. The graphical models generated are good management tools for decision-making to help develop a competent labor pool within a company.
