ABSTRACT

The nature of the semiconductor industry is inherently hazardous due to its high-technology process, materials and tools. Compliance with and implementation of the many codes and standards during both the construction phase and the production phase are required to create a safe and a better working environment. The Literature Review herein shows the enormous amount of codes and standards information available published by various code-making organizations developed for advanced technology manufacturing facilities. It also shows the development of an International set of codes to provide a uniform set of criteria for the design and building of facilities and refers to a case study that illustrates the importance of a web-based Codes and Standards Resource tool. The purpose of this research is to identify, specify and catalog the newly released 2000 International Building and Fire Codes that directly apply to the semiconductor industry. The research could provide semiconductor professionals with a Codes and Standards web-based resource tool that would facilitate easy access to and dissemination of valuable codes and standards data specifically for the semiconductor industry. Some recommendations for future research have been identified that would make the resource tool more comprehensive and powerful for the user
